“Big Kid Backpack” Essentials for Potty Training Accidents

Potty training! We are on our way!

A Potty Training Backpack or Bag to show they are "Big Kids Now"

When you are home all day you have everything you need right there, but when you have to leave the house then things get a little scary, so we have compiled a list of essentials that we feel every parent should try to keep with them for unexpected accidents on the go.

We suggest that you get your child a “Big Kid Backpack or Bag” that can be pre-packed so it is ready to go when you are. Diaper bags are for babies, we want to encourage our growing children to have the “Big Kid Attitude” so they can learn positive habits in learning independence. Backpacks work best because they are hands free and less likely to be set down and forgotten when you are out and about.

Now what to put in your child’s to go bag.

  1. At least one extra set of underwear, two or more if you will be gone long or if you are just beginning potty training. We offer waterproof underwear on this site so that you can avoid wet spots, but still need to bring extra changes of these as well, this will limiting the need for extra clothing.
  2. Extra set(s) of pants to match # of underwear (suggestion; try buying several pairs of bottoms with the same color or designs that can be mixed and matched so your child matches and outfits are still cute)
  3. Extra set of socks because gravity works.
    • For little girl’s tights/ leggings are cute but very hard to get up and down quickly when needed.
    • For little boy’s you may think of adding an extra shirt because they are still learning to aim and up is an option.
  4. Several plastic bags to put wet clothes in.          We don’t suggest spending alot on gallon size zip-lock bags. You might try disposable plastic doggy-doo bags. These are large enough to hold a child’s set of wet clothing without being bulky, cheaper to buy and found anywhere pet supplies are found.
  5. Baby Wipes! Rather then drag along a large bulky baby wipes container take 7-10 baby wipes and put them in a zip-lock sandwich baggie. They can be used for sticky fingers and faces too.
  6. Rewards! If you are using a reward system e.g. Charts, Stickers, or other ways to help motivate your child in potty training, bring a portable version if possible or extra rewards. Examples: small candy, stickers, or an ink stamp for the hand that they can show off when they remember to use the toilet away from home.

Each child is different; each parent’s preferences vary, so this list is the basics essentials most will need. You can add and subtract from this list as you see fit for your personal preferences. We hope this list will help get you out of the house and on with everyday life.
